Bedbug Tips

Bedbugs are an old pest problem that has resurfaced in the twenty-first century. Many pesticides that were once effective against the pest are no longer effective.

Bedbugs are tiny, apple seed shaped insects that are actually parasites that feed on the blood of people, pets, and birds. The nymphs are white and are almost invisible. The insects can be carried to your home with luggage and clothing from anyplace that is infested with bedbugs.

Keeping your home clean of all insect pests can be easily accomplished with electronic pest eliminators.

Soil Produces New Antibiotic

Scientists in Haiti have found a microbe in the soil which may be the source from which a new powerful antibiotic may be produced.

For years children played in the dirt and were healthier than many children are today despite all the new and improved cleansers, soaps, and other housecleaning practices. But this over cautiousness has caused more problems instead of solutions. Even most hospitals use alcohol-based hand cleaners instead of antibacterial washes that most people use everyday in their homes.

The overuse of antibacterial cleansers along with doctors prescribing antibiotics for almost everything including the common cold, has caused many antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Many natural foods such as garlic are very effective in fighting disease causing germs.

Plant Based Dishware Replaces Styrofoam

Besides plastics, styrofoam is one of the fastest growing items helping to fill up landfills at an astonishing rate.

Just as new laws are being enforced to reduce the use of plastic bags, new laws are being created for the reduction of plastic waste from eateries.

Oakland and San Francisco are enforcing new laws to ban styrofoam and have food sellers use dishware that are biodegradable. Such dishware will be made from paper, cardboard, or plant based substances from corn, potato starch, soy and sugar cane.

The ban went into effect on January 1, 2007 in Oakland and San Francisco will follow on June 1, 2007.

Vitamin D And Cancer

Common vitamin D found in milk, vegetables, and plenty of sunshine just might be an aid in the fight against prostate cancer.

Researchers from Canada, the United States and Europe will be conducting a clinical trial testing Vitamin D along with a chemotherapy drug. The expect the treatment to increase survival time for prostate cancer patients.

Earlier studies show that vitamin D has a possible role in fighting cancer. Death rates from breast, colon, and reproductive organ cancers are lower in areas where people spend more time outside in the sunshine.

Vitamin D has also been shown to kill some cancer cells in the laboratory.

Antibiotics Don't Help Colds

If you have the common cold, don't waste money on a doctor visit for an expensive antibiotic.

Antibiotics are medicines for bacterial infections but do not kill viruses. The common cold is caused by a virus which is not killed with an antibiotic.

According to doctors at Washington University in St. Louis, taking antibiotics during a cold only help to create more antibiotic resistant bacteria making antibiotics less effective against disease causing bacteria.

Cold sufferers should drink plenty of fluids, rest, and maybe try the old fashioned chicken soup, garlic, and other natural remedies.

Carbon Dioxide Aids Tomato Production

Carbon dioxide emission is the culprit of global warming according to scientists. But at a greenhouse in Leamington, Ontario, Canada tomato plants will use the carbon dioxide.

In the spring of 2007 a new electrical and heating system will be installed at the greenhouse. Instead of being expelled into the atmosphere where it would add to the global warming problem, the excess carbon dioxide gas produced will be used in the greenhouse as food to promote faster growth of the tomato plants.

Leamington is known as the Tomato Capital of Canada.

Tomatoes are a very healthful food to eat and are very easy to grow.
