Gas Saving Cars Popular

With the high price of gasoline, more and more consumers are returning to smaller cars.

According to Michigan's Center for Automotive Research the price of gas has risen by more than ten percent a year since 2002. Car production costs have also increased.

As a result 80% to 90% of new car buyers are considering fuel economy their number one priority in selecting a new vehicle says the US magazine Automotive Design & Production.

In the meantime there are many tips to get more mileage from any vehicle.

Fish Reveal Estrogen Levels

Environmental damage to marine life is already being exposed as being caused by pharmaceutical hormone drugs in wastewater.

Lobsters have already shown a 70 percent decrease in production.
Scientists at the Fudan University in Beijing have developed genetically modified fish that turn green when placed in water with high levels of estrogen.

Estrogen in the water, soil and food can cause deformed babies, and infertility. Just a tiny level of estrogen can leave men infertile say the researchers.

Natural sources of hormones to relieve menopausal symptoms can be prescribed.

No Milk With Tea

If you drink tea for it's health giving benefits then do not drink it with milk added. That is the conclusion by a professor of cardiology at the Charite Hospital in Berlin, Germany.

It appears the proteins in milk cancel out the health giving flavonoids in tea called catechins.

Tests with black tea, tea with milk and tea with hot water were conducted on 16 volunteer subjects. Black tea caused dilation of blood vessels whereas tea with milk did not said a molecular biologist.

Estrogen Endangers Lobsters

Between 1998 and 2004 there has been a 70 percent decline in the lobster population according to the Massachusetts Lobstermen's Association.

The answer may lie in the water the lobsters live in being contaminated with human hormones.

Human hormones are part of a group of chemicals called endocrine disruptors which are present in pharmaceutical hormone drugs, pesticides, detergents, and cosmetics. These chemicals can cause cancer, disrupt the immune system, and cause reproductive system disorders.

Scientists suspect that female estrogen in birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy is the prime cause of the lobster decline because estrogen is very much like the lobsters natural molting hormone and is interfering with the lobsters natural growth, molting, and reproduction.

More natural hormone substitutes for menopausal symptoms are available for those concerned about the environment.

Eliminate Mosquitoes Early

A new vaccine for malaria is being developed by scientists of the not-for-profit Malaria Vaccine Initiative.

They are making the vaccine with the saliva from mosquitoes because the parasite is transmitted through the mosquitoes' salivary glands to the people they bite.

For homeowners, the time to kill mosquitoes is before they become mosquitoes. In the larval stage.

Moths Can Harm Environment

While most moths are just a nuisance some species can actually do great harm to the environment.

A cactus moth brought by mankind from South America threatens the nopal, the prickly pear plant, in Mexico according to the Mexico's plant safely agency.

The cactus produces the prickly pear which is eaten by people. The cactus also provides a home for birds and reptiles.

Infested plants are being cut down and burned.

In homes, moths can be easily controlled with herbs rather than smelly moth balls.
